Tax Guide Revision
There were some parts of the tax guide for first-year American JETs that were misleading.  I've corrected them and posted the new version here.

I changed the amount on line 17 of the 2555-EZ to $14,922.72 from $26,952.72. These are just arbitrary numbers, but the important thing to keep in mind is that you only report the income you earned IN JAPAN in 2012 on line 17 of the 2555-EZ. You write your JET net salary (#3 on the foreign earned income statement example shown in the GIH) AND and money you earned BEFORE JET in 2012 on line 7 of the 1040.
Please, contain your excitement.

Call for Submissions and Designer for Spring Edition of The YOKA
SUBMISSIONS:  For those interested in being published, here's how you can contribute:

Write an article.  This can be about pretty much anything you want, as long it relates somehow to Kumamoto, Japan, teaching, or international exchange.    Did you do something really interesting?   Attend a fun event?  Have some reflections you'd like to share?  There is no limit on length.  Pictures to supplement your words are also highly recommended.

Take a picture.  Kumamoto is a beautiful place, especially in the spring.  If you have any spring photos of Kumamoto that you would like to share, please send us the picture, your name, where the picture was taken, and the title of the pic.  All photos will be in color (unless otherwise requested).

Other.  Contributions are not just limited to articles and pictures.  Previous YOKAs have contained a collection of senryu poems in English.  We are always looking for creative ways to make the YOKA better, so your ideas and creativity are more than welcome.

Please send us your submissions by Friday, April 26.

DESIGNER:  The designer's job will be to take all the articles and bits and pieces of content that I send you and turn it into a completed YOKA (in pdf format) in about ten days.  The last YOKA (click here) looked FANTASTIC thanks to Laura Turner.  If you are interested in designing the Spring YOKA, please email the PAs by Friday, April 26.

Ever seen these logos around?  In an effort to reduce the use of farm chemicals and produce safer and more healthy foods, the prefecture has created a system of logos that distinguishes how "green" a product is according to the standards outlined by Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS).  The logos are lettered A through F from left to right.  Here's what they mean:

A - Made with reduced amounts of farm chemicals and other environmentally friendly farming techniques
B - Amount of farm chemicals reduced 30% or more
-  Amount of farm chemicals reduced 50% or more
D - Amount of farm chemicals reduced by 50% or more, AND certified by the prefecture
E - No farm chemicals used
F - No farm chemicals used for two years or more

Learn more about each area in the prefecture.
