Name of Teacher: Elizabeth Costales

Class/Grade/Language Level: Elementary 1st and 2nd

Textbook and specific lesson: N/A

Goal: To remember animal names and learn about the sounds animals make

Preparation: Animal flashcards and karuta cards

Class time: 45 minutes

  • Introduce the vocabulary words to the students using flashcards
- Hold up a flashcard and ask, ”What`s this?"
- Say the name of the animal and have them repeat.
- After teaching them all of the vocabulary words, review them.
- I usually use the missing game to do this.
- Have students close their eyes and remove one flashcard.
- Have them tell you which one is missing.

  • Next, play karuta.
- Split the students into groups of four or five and give each group a set of cards.
- To keep it a little more fair, I`ll often have the student put their hands on their heads before I call out an animal.

  • After a few rounds of karuta, introduce animal sounds.
- Hold up a flashcard and ask "What does animal say?"
- They`ll answer with the Japanese sound effect. I always write it on the board and say, "In English, animal says ..."
- Make as many ridiculous animal sounds as you can. Then have the students try to repeat them after you.

  • Last, play another game of karuta.
- Instead of animal names, use animal sounds.
