Textbook and specific lesson: Let’s Try 2 - Unit 5 Do you have a pen?
Goal: Learn the names of classroom items.
Preparation: Make cards (large and small) with the new vocabulary
Class time: 45 min
A) Greeting and Warm-ups (10-13 min.)
- i)We do our greeting, which includes “How are you?”, “How’s the weather?”, and “What day is it today?”
- b)Icebreaker 1
- i)We usually do something like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”, since our students really seem to like that song still.
- c)Icebreaker 2
- i)Then we do a song. We like doing “7 steps” and replacing numbers with clapping or stomping.
B) Main Lesson
- a) Introducing New Vocabulary (10 min.)
- i) We use large cards to introduce the new words (pencil, eraser, pencil case, ruler, glue stick, pen, notebook, calendar, stapler, pencil sharpener, marker, magnet).
- ii) With each new card we first ask “What’s this?” and let the students guess, before teaching them the right answer. They usually repeat after us twice.
- iii) Once all the new words are on the board we do our own chants, and sometimes we have a student or two lead the chants if there’s a volunteer.
- b) Game 1 - Memory Game (10 min.)
- i) Students make pairs and have 1 pack of small cards of all the new words. They put their hands on their head and wait for a teacher reads out to call out 4 words in a specific order. For example, “Pencil, eraser, notebook, calendar...go!” When the teacher says go, students work together to put their small cards in the correct order of “pencil, eraser, notebook, calendar”. Once about everyone is done, the teacher shows them the correct order with the large cards on the board, and has the students repeat these words after him/her.
- ii) We usually do 4 words once, 6 words twice and 8 words once. This can vary depending on how well the kids know the words. We try to have at least 3 rounds though.
- c) Game 2 - Karuta Game (10 min)
- i) In pairs the students put out all of the cards in between them, and wait with their hands on their heads. A teacher randomly calls out a word, and the students snatch the correct card before their partner. It’s an oldie, but a goodie.
- ii) After a round we usually go over words that most students had a hard time remembering.
- iii) We can usually play around 3 rounds depending on the rowdiness of the class that day.
C) Closing (2-5 min.)
- a) The students return the cards to the teacher and write in their lesson review sheets.
