Music and Drawing!

- Cultural awareness: Introduce musical genres and styles from the ALT's native or adopted culture
- Creativity: Enhance students' spontaneity and artistic talent
- Language: Check vocabulary and comprehension; practice reading aloud.
- Creation of a music playlist of 15-20 songs; each song is timed to play for 1 min/1 min 30 secs. The songs should reflect a wide variety of styles.
- For the final activities two songs should be played in their entirety (separate from the playlist).
- Requires laptop or other music player.
- Additional speakers may be required.
- Each student requires one pen or pencil and one piece of paper.
- Requires full class time. 45-50 minutes.
- ALT will collect papers to grade and return to students in a later class.
How the Lesson Incorporates the Four Skills
- Reading: Students read their own work to check for accuracy and to share their work in front of the class
- Writing: Students label the images they draw to check their vocabulary. Students incorporate labeled words into full sentences.
- Speaking: Students practice speaking when they share their sentences or their story out loud to the class.
- Listening: Students listen to music with English lyrics; students listen to spoken English from the instructor when directions are provided; students listen to each other share their work aloud.
PART ONE: MUSIC AND DRAWING
- Students should sit in groups.
- Each student in the group gets their own piece of paper.
- When the song starts playing, students will start drawing whatever they feel like on their paper, ideally letting the music inspire them or set the tone of their art.
- The song will change automatically after a minute or so. When the students hear the song change, they pass their paper to the student on their left. If students lose track of when the music changes, instructors can say "switch" to remind them to change papers.
- When students get a new paper, they immediately start drawing. They can draw either a new image on the paper or build onto an original image.
- For the duration of the playlist, students will rotate their papers in a circle repeatedly and should fill the entire page with multiple images.
- When the playlist is completed, students return papers to their original owners.
PART TWO: ENGLISH TIME
- The instructor will play a separate song in its entirety, giving students 2-5 minutes to work. During this song students must label as many items they see on their paper in English. The goal is to check their vocabulary and see if they can correctly name what they see. For low-level students, mistakes in spelling can be accepted, as long as they use the correct words. For upper-level students, they have to identify the item and spell the word correctly for points. When the song stops, the students stop writing.
- After the students are done labeling the drawings, have them flip the sheet over.
- A new song will be played in its entirety, giving the students 2-5 minutes to work. During the song, students will try to write as many English sentences as possible using at least one of the vocabulary words they wrote on the front of their page for each sentence. For upper-level students, they can write a very brief story using the vocabulary words from the front page.
- For the last minutes of class, students can get a speaking bonus if they volunteer to read their sentences out loud to the class.
PART THREE: GRADING THE PAPERS
- The ALT will collect all students' work for grading.
- For every correctly labeled item in English, students get 1 point. (Upper-levels have to correctly name and correctly spell the word).
- For every complete sentence (containing a subject, verb, and object if applicable), students get 2 points. If the sentence has no grammatical errors, students get 3 points.
- For every student who read their sentences out loud in front of the class, they get a speaking bonus of 5 points.
- The top-scoring papers in the class (1st, 2nd, and 3rd place) win prizes--stickers, candy, etc.
