Class/Grade/Language Level: Elementary School 3rd – 4th
Goal: Learn food names and a simple dialogue for ordering at a restaurant.
Preparation: Laminated food flashcards, food bingo cards, stickers (optional)
Class time: 45 minutes
1) Begin with your usual greetings. (2-3 minutes)
2) Warm up. Warm up with a short activity reviewing what they learned last lesson. I occasionally use the Pass Game for this (pass around a ball while music plays, randomly pause the music, then ask the student holding the ball an English question). (5 minutes)
3) Introduce the topic. Tell the students that we are going to study food today, and then tell them that we will become restaurant owners and customers at the end of the lesson. (1 minute)
4) Introduce the vocabulary. For this lesson, I usually introduce pizza, ice cream, donuts, fish, milk, water, tea, coffee, salad, cake, bread, sandwich, soup, juice, hamburger, french fries, eggs, chocolate, hotdog, steak, and pancakes. I chose these words because a lot of them have Japanese cognates, so they’re generally pretty easy for students to pick up. Ask the students “What`s this?” and give them a chance to say the name of the food before introducing it in English. Occasionally ask “Do you like~?” to keep students engaged. (7-8 minutes)
5) Play the “What’s Missing?” game. Since there’s a lot of vocabulary in this lesson, I like to start the first round of “What’s Missing?” by removing half or more of the flashcards, then I gradually remove fewer and fewer flashcards. Finally, in the last round, I only remove one flashcard. This makes the game more difficult as it goes on. (7-8 minutes)
6) Introduce the dialogue:
Store owner：What do you want? Customer: ~, please! Store owner: Okay! Here you are. Customer: Thank you!
I introduce this dialogue by doing a demonstration with the HRT. Then, I ask students to guess the meaning of the demonstration. Finally, I drill the dialogue by asking the students to repeat. (5 minutes)
7) Main activity. Pass out the food flashcards to half of the class and pass out food bingo cards to the other half. You can make the food bingo cards online at []. Set a timer for a pre-decided amount of time and let students wander around the room and do the dialogue with their classmates, filling their bingo cards as they go. When the timer goes off, switch so that the store owners have a chance to do bingo. You can offer stickers as a prize for getting bingo if you’d like, but do what’s best for your class. (15-18 minutes)
