Textbook and specific lesson: New Horizon 2, Unit 5 Activity 2 (page 77)

Goal: To practice giving reasons for choosing a transportation system over the other

Preparation: Little preparation

Class time: 50 minutes


1. Greetings

A) Hello, how are you?
B) Ask about the weather, date, day and time
C) Can also ask about what students did last weekend or what they will do next weekend

2. Review

A) Read the stories of Unit 5
B) Do a review mini-test (vocabulary and grammar points)
C) Correct the mini-test and ask about the scores

3. Warm-up for main topic: This should be done without showing the textbook answers to the students

A) Scenario: students are going on a school trip to Kyoto, so ALT asks them “If you will go to Kyoto, how do you like to travel, by car or by train?”
B) Students will choose one of them.
C) Then, ALT asks “why?” to a few students  students give their own reasons using “I like to travel by car/train because ~” (it can be in Japanese and the JTE will translate in English, but the reasons have to be different. If the same reason is repeated, the ALT should ask them to think about another reason). ALT/JTE writes the answers of the advantages/disadvantages on the board (make a similar table to the one in the textbook on page 77)

4. Students open their textbook to page 77. They practice the textbook reasons in the Tool Box with the ALT.

5. Students write down the sentence “I like to travel by car/train because ~”  they can choose a reason from the Tool Box, the reasons on the board, or their own reason if they have a different one.

6. The students practice in pairs. One student says their reason and the other student answers by agreeing or disagreeing and then gives their reason. For example, student A says “I like to travel by train because it is faster.” Student B can say “I don’t think so. I like to travel by car because I don’t have to walk to the hotel.”

7. The ALT chooses some students to make a report about their partner’s answer. For example, student B will say “student A said that s/he likes to travel by train because it is faster.”

8. Consolidation: The ALT gives comments about the today’s class and the students’ presentations.
