Class/Grade/Language Level: Elementary School 3-4th grade (maybe 1st and 2nd depending on students’ physical skills, there’s a lot of cutting with scissors and gluing.)
Textbook and specific lesson: Vegetables
Goal: To learn vegetable names and practice some conversation (Do you like ~ ?) through making pizza for a friend! (or partner).
Preparation: (1) Blank pizza pie worksheet. Students (or the teacher) write their names on the bottom next to ___ ’s Pizza. (2) A worksheet with vegetable images for coloring and to cut out later to glue onto pizza. (Can use clip art of vegetables. I photocopied my school’s vegetable flash cards in black and white, reduced the size so that they could fit on the pizza.) (3) Color pencils, glue, and scissors.
Class time: 50 minutes
1) Regular greetings warm up or song (5 minutes)
2) Tell students they will be making (vegetable) pizza today! But first they need to learn how to say vegetable names in English! Teach the vegetable names and correct pronunciation. Have the kids repeat after you. Do couple of rounds. (5 minutes)
3) Pass out the worksheet with the vegetable images on it and have the students take out their color pencils. When you say a vegetable name, the students need to color in the vegetable you called out. Give only 30 seconds to color in each vegetable. So they have to color fast! Move onto the next vegetable and so on. (If you don’t set a time limit, they will take forever coloring!) Have them say the vegetable name over and over again while they’re coloring it too. Helps them remember! When you finish saying all the vegetables have the students put away their color pencils in their desks (to prevent students from coloring instead of paying attention to the lesson…) (8 minutes)
4) Next, teach target conversation “Do you like ~?” “Yes, I do. / No, I don’t.” Practice the dialog couple of times with you pointing at various vegetable flash cards. Make sure they don’t get the ‘do’s’ mixed up. Then have the students practice with partners or in small groups. Walk around the class to check their pronunciation. (8minutes)
5) Now to make the pizzas. Tell students they will make pizzas for their partner. So have students turn their desks so they’re facing their partners, and exchange vegetable worksheets. Then they ask each other what vegetables do they like using the aforementioned dialog. For vegetables they like, draw a ‘nice’ circle around the vegetable (because they will cut along this circle after). For vegetables they dislike, draw a small ‘x’ next to the vegetable. This way the students remember what vegetables they already asked. Once the students begin to cut out the vegetables, pass out the blank pizza pie worksheet and they can start gluing the vegetables onto the pizza. If there is time, they can color in cheese and meat toppings too. (20 minutes)
6) Ask students to give their completed pizzas to their partner and show off their completed pizzas. Looks delicious! That’s all for today! Regular ending greetings. (5 minutes)
Feedback and Notes: To save time, be clear on setting time limits and instructions for cutting the vegetables and gluing them onto the pizzas. This part is the most time consuming, especially for 3rd graders if they don’t have strong scissor cutting skills. Also tell the students to make their pizzas with TLC as if it were their own pizza! No one wants an ugly pizza, their feelings will be hurt!
