Goal: Get everyone speaking and listening to English!

Preparation: You need 8 word cards and 8 magnets

Class time: 15-20 minutes

This is great for getting everybody speaking English loudly! Even the shyer ones! First, you need to make 8 cards, each with a word to guess on About 1/6 of an A4 page size each works well. I include pictures on the cards just in case some students don't know a word. You can choose words that relate to the lesson topic, or words that have a theme such that the students can practice a certain phrase. For example, "You use this when you ...".

Attach the words to the board with magnets face down so the kids can't see them. Write "Start" at one end, and "Finish" at the other. Get the kids into groups of 4 and decide who will go 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Then we start the relay race! Person 1 will come up to the board and look at the first card, and then will have to describe it to his or her group. Once the group guess the word, person 2 comes to the board and looks at the second card and describes it, and so on. The first team to finish guessing all 8 cards wins.

There are 8 cards, so each student will get 2 turns to be the person who describes the word. I usually make the first 4 cards easier than the last 4. It is good to do some examples before starting.
