What is KumAJET?
KumAJET is the local chapter of the Association for Japan Exchange and Teaching (AJET). AJET is a national volunteer organization of JET Programme participants whose mission is to serve the JET community by building support networks, organizing useful information, and offering resources to enhance the lives of JETs (more info on AJET and all of their great resources at ajet.net).
KumAJET is a group that brings people together to have fun and make friends throughout Kumamoto. Whether you’re looking to volunteer, have a night out on the town, or explore some of Kumamoto’s scenery, we are the group for you. Although KumAJET is run by JETs, our events are open to all residents of Kumamoto, both foreign and Japanese. Along with planning KumAJET events we also hope to get more JETs out to other events going on in the prefecture by advertising for them on our Facebook page and website (kumajet.org). Our main goals are to provide opportunities for our members to meet new people, see new places, and make great memories during their time in Japan while giving as much back to our communities as we possibly can.
You can contact KumAJET here. Please do not contact KumAJET about site content or PA-related matters.
Meet your 2016-2017 KumAJET Representatives!
Zaynab Nakhid – Secretary
Aso City, 2nd year ALT
Hi everyone, my name is Zaynab and I come from the beautiful twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Being from a place where it’s always summer I enjoy swimming, hiking and eating spicy food. I would like to visit every where in Kumamoto if I get the chance and I look forward to meeting all of you!
Chiri Davis – Public Relations
Amakusa City, 2nd year ALT
Hey, my name is Chiri. It’s okay if you want to give me a nickname. I enjoy making people happy and keeping the party alive. There is not much I want to say about myself now. I like to keep some surprises for the hang outs. It is best to get to know a person through experience. That way you can come to appreciate the people you encounter.
Aaron Maisler – Webmaster
Yatsushiro City, 2nd year ALT
“Well, what kin I do fer ya?”
– Griswold, Diablo I.
Hello guys. I am Aaron, and I hail from the sunny and tropical Tampa, Florida. I am a Yatsushiro City ALT, and when I’m not playing guitar, I’m probably at work. Or playing video games. Or sleeping. Well, you guys get it, I’m a nerd. Anyways, As the webmaster here at Kumajet my goal is to make this site the best it can be. So if you know about any cool things to do around Kumamoto, please drop me a line. Likewise, if you have any questions about anything at all, I am pretty much addicted to my phone, so message me anytime. I am really looking forward to meeting all the new JETs this year and making our community the best that it can be.
Katelyn DePalmer – Finance
Asagiri Town, 2nd year ALT
Hi guys! I’m Katelyn, a third-culture kid from America. I came here from Florida (but from the panhandle, so like, not at all “Florida”) and will be entering my second year in Asagiri Town. My area is pretty inaka, but super gorgeous! I teach only at nursery and elementary schools, as well as some adult eikaiwa. My hobbies are painting my nails, eating everything, and playing the same three ukulele son gs. I also love exploring our beautiful island of Kyushu, and am always looking for travel buddies! Kumamoto is truly a hidden gem: not only do we have the best mascot in all of Japan, our prefecture is chock-full of unspoiled nature, delicious food, and cool cultural events. I’m excited for this year’s KumAJET parties and events with our lovely crew, and I really hope you guys are too. よろしくおねがいします!
Jamie Jové-Viniegra – Historian and Photographer
Asagiri Town, 2nd year ALT
Hello everyone! I’m Jamie. I come from the True North Strong and Free! (Shout out to the 6!)
Now I live in the most southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture in a beautiful little town called Asagiri. I teach JHS and eikawai classes. I am a second year JET and I’m excited to be part of the KUMAJET team this year.
I am interested in taking pictures and exploring the Kumagawa bike trail, however I have yet to master doing both at the same time… I also enjoy exploring the different areas Kuma-Gun and learning more about this beautiful country and its rich culture.
I also love collecting postcards and writing letters! (A little bit of advice, be careful when you go to Daiso or Seria, if you like pretty stationary these places will clean out your wallet!) Currently, I`m on a mission to collect all 47 gotochi postcards from the 47 different prefectures of Japan (and all 7 from each different prefecture in Kyushu)
To the incoming JETs, I look forward to meeting you and welcoming you to this beautiful prefecture we are lucky to call home.
To all JETs, I am excited to share all of the different events that we have plan for you this year!
