Name of Teacher:Lewis Marks
Class/Grade/Language Level:1st, 2nd and 3rd years/all grades/low level
Textbook and specific lesson:N/A
Goal:To learn and use English slang and gestures.
Preparation:Research easy to understand English slang that your country uses often. 5 is enough for low level students. Print out worksheets for the class.
Class time:50 mins
The worksheet consist of fill in the blanks so that students will follow along with the lesson. e.g. Hello:_______________ where the student will write the following; Hello:___________ And at the end of the worksheet will be a "Change the dialogue below into cool English" section. You will give them simple dialogue that uses the new slang learnt in the non-slang version. Then the students must change that to the slang version (or visa-versa).
The main learning loop (30 mins)
I used a power point presentation, but you can teach this lesson using other means too. During the lesson you will first introduce the learning loop will go as follows:
- Show the normal English word
- Get students to guess the slang version of that word (you can give hints).
- Practice saying the word with the students.
- Get a volunteer to come up and demonstrate the use of the slang and gesture.
- Challenge the students to get up, move and use the slang and gesture with 3 different people.
- Repeat from 1.
Then have a quick quiz (10 mins)
If you show the students the normal version of one of the words used, then they have to say the slang version. If you show the students the slang version, then they have to say the normal version. After revealing the answer, repeat the answer together. Do this for all of the words learnt in both forms.
Finally direct the students to the dialogue on the nicely made worksheet. Read it through together. Then ask them to change the normal words in the dialogue to their slang counterparts. After they've done, a pair of students to volunteer and read their answer (by this point they should love volunteering).
