Class/Grade/Language Level: Elementary School 4th grade

Textbook and specific lesson: Let's try 2 Unit 6, Alphabet

Goal: To have the students learn more about the alphabet’s non-capital letters.

Preparation: The let’s try 2 book, unit cards and a tablet + screen/projector for the digital textbook activities.

Class time: 45 minutes

(5 minutes) First, normal greetings will be done, along with the 4 points and questions such as what the day, date and weather is like. The ALT will ask all these questions in English and support the students if they have trouble pronouncing the date, day or weather.

(5 minutes) Then, a chant / song will be played, the ABC song / alphabet chant so that the students get a feel for the alphabet more. The ALT can help the students if they are having any problems. The chant can be repeated slower if the students initially had trouble or perhaps without subtitles or speech if they feel confident enough.

(10 minutes) Next, we will do “Let’s watch and Think” on page 22 which will help familiarize the students with the non-capital letters. With the JTE and ALT going through each question and answer while making sure all the students understand the context of the activity will ensure that they retain the most knowledge and can move onto the next activity.

(20 minutes) To test the students alphabet skills, next we will play the alphabet searching game and the ohajiki game. The alphabet searching game consists of the JTE or ALT choosing a word on page 22 (such as TAXI or STOP) and slowly spelling that word out loud. The first student to put their finger on the correct word and say it / attempt to say it is the winner. Winners can get stickers or whatever reward is deemed appropriate. The ohajiki game is when the students receive 5 glass counters and put them over 5 alphabet letters on their books. The JTE and ALT will then take turns calling out the letters of the alphabet with the students repeating them. If a letter that has a glass counter on it is called by either the JTE or the ALT, the student can take the counter off after repeating after the JTE of ALT. The aim of the game is to get rid of all your counters the fastest.

(5 minutes) If there still is time after the games, the students can chant the alphabet chant or sing the ABC song again, this time possibly harder or faster if it was not done so earlier.

(5 minutes) Lastly, the students will review today's lesson and after the ALT has said their comments, then they will say their goodbyes.
