Name of Teacher: Chase Sutherland

Class/Grade/Language Level: First year academic

Textbook and specific lesson: N/A

Goal: Review maps and directions vocabulary words and phrases. Be able to ask for and give directions.

Preparation: Print out the worksheets, laptop and projector for the map picture. (The worksheet looks normal on my work computer, but looks funky on my personal computer. May need to edit.

Class time: about 50 minutes

Worksheet for this lesson

Warm Up 5 minutes

  • Students will ask each other “Where is a place you want to go someday?”
  • And answer with “I want to go to _______ because_________”
  • Switch pairs
  • ALT will ask some students to volunteer

Vocab 5 minutes

  • ALT and JTE pass out worksheet
  • The ALT says the vocab and key phrases and the students repeat

Dialogue demonstration and practice 5 minutes

  • ALT and JTE will read a short dialogue about someone who is lost and a person that helps them
  • Then the students practice in pairs
  • Do rock paper scissors, winner goes first
  • After they finish, switch roles

Giving directions practice 5-8 minutes

  • To check the students’ listening skill and to review the key phrases, the ALT tells the students the starting point on the map and gives them *directions
  • Then, after the ALT is done, the students tell the ALT where they are on the map
  • The ALT can show the class on the map how they got from the start to end point
  • Can do this practice a few times

Giving directions pair work activity 10 minutes

  • In pairs, students do rock paper scissors
  • The winner chooses where they are and where they want to go
  • Their partner gives them directions
  • Then the students switch roles
  • This practice can alternate a few times or they can switch partners

Presentations 5 minutes

  • ALT asks some students to help him or her go somewhere on the map
