Textbook and specific lesson: We Can 2, Unit 3
Goal: Students will understand verb conjugation for simple, present tense verbs such as play, like, want, and study.
Preparation: Prompts for Pictionary game, paper to draw on (I usually cut B5 in half), PowerPoint quiz
Class time: 45 minutes
- In We Can Unit 3, students learn how to talk about themselves and someone else using eat, like, want, and study. After using and becoming familiar with these verbs in a first-person and second-person context, students move on to their friends, someone they know, or even an anime character or made up character. This lesson practices the grammar for third-person singular situations, building on vocabulary that students are already familiar with. As such, feel free to substitute different vocabulary in the Pictionary prompts! Pictionary prompts can be made more difficult by removing some Japanese or all, but be aware that not all students can read English at this point.

Greeting (3-5 min) – Whatever you like to do—Hello! How are you? Ask your friend! How’s the weather? What day is it today? What’s the date?
Warm-up (5 min) – I have students review grammar from previous lessons here with quick conversations, but you do you! An example for this lesson might be using the question, “What video game do you play?” or, the controversial, “What conbini (convenience store) do you like?”.

- Use some fun and wacky gestures—sometimes students get fired up and will make their own when you ask for an example response
- 4) Play the warm-up jan-ken game
- The game:
- Students play rock paper scissors. The winner asks the question, the loser responds. Winner gets 1 point. At the end (usually after 2 min of playing), students with the highest points get a sticker. Yay!
Review/practice (10 min) – Review and practice some sentences using each verb. Make sure you go through using different subjects, too—I, you, she/he, person’s name, two people, etc. It can help to have students discuss with one another when a verb takes on an s and then tell the class. Japanese is fine for this, as you or your home room teacher can check and correct (depending on your Japanese level).
Quiz Battle! (3-5 min) – Students make pairs placing an eraser or pencil between them. Students place their hands on their heads in the “ready-position”. The teacher will say a phrase using the target grammar and the students translate it to either Japanese or English (depending on what language the teacher said it in) and then grab the eraser for 1 point. Have students repeat the phrase in English before moving to the next one—using rhythm helps. Do 5-7 phrases, ending on an odd value unless you want them to tie.
Pictionary Game! (~15 min) – Demonstrate and explain how the Pictionary game works using a few volunteers and your JTE/HRT. Students make groups of 4 or 5 and then two teams within those groups of 2 or 3. Each team receives a set of prompts which they shuffle and then place face down (no peeking!). On each team, one person takes a prompt and draws while the other person guesses what the drawing is. Students have 1 minute to both draw and guess after the drawer reads the prompt. If the guesser gets the prompt, the team receives one point. The timer is set and reset for the entire class at once, not per group. The drawer changes with each new prompt. Make sure students understand that the answer is always a studies/likes/wants/eats b, verb changing depending on a. After doing however many prompts you’d like, time permitting, the winning team in each group receives stickers! Yay!
Quiz Review (5 min) – Review the day’s grammar however you’d like. I’ve attached a power point quiz in which students identify the subject then verb with picture prompts. Pictures are not my own and may be subject to copyright. Don’t do silly things.
